Art & Essay Contest for Middle and High Schools                                                         Deadline: January 23, 2009

Middle and high-school students in the state of Georgia are invited to submit their original essays and works of art on the theme of "Alliance of Civilizations" which is the United Nation's concept of interaction and coordination among nations and cultures globally. Its purpose is to establish relations and facilitate cross-cultural and interfaith dialogue, understanding, reconciliation and cooperation.
Prizes:

1st Place: Trip to Turkey + $200 gift card
2nd Place: Trip to Turkey + $150 gift card
3rd Place: Trip to Turkey + $100 gift card
20 Honorable Mentions: Admission to Six Flags over Georgia
Sponsoring teachers of the first 3 winners will be awarded a trip to Turkey and will each receive a $100 gift card.

4th Annual Arbor Day T-Shirt Contest                                                                         Deadline: January 20, 2009
Help Alpharetta celebrate Arbor Day by creating a slogan and designing a t-shirt for Arbor Day 2009.  The City of Alpharetta and the Tree Commission will  host the event at Wills Park, the home of the Arboretum, on February 21st.  It will be a fun filled day with information and activities for all ages.  The prizes will be awarded for the first and second place winners of the competition. The winning entries will be displayed at City Hall.

Contest Rules:

First think of a slogan for Arbor Day.  The slogan must contain the word “tree” or “trees”. Then illustrate your slogan on an 8 ½ x 11 piece of white paper using colored pencils, chalk, crayons, oil pastels, or water colors. (use only 4 colors) Last put this information on the back of your entry:

name, grade, school or scout troop, e mail address and phone number.

Toshiba/NSTA sponsored ExploraVision Awards                                                                        Deadline: January 28, 2009
Open for students in grades K-12.    Students are to create and explore a vision of a technology 20 years in the future. 

Keep Roswell Beautiful Georgia Environmental Video Competition                                        Deadline: February 12, 2009
Keep Roswell Beautiful is pleased to announce their Environmental Video Competition open to all students attending schools in Georgia (Elementary through Graduate) and students who are residents of Georgia.  Students are invited to submit a short video on an environmental issue facing Georgia. Independent or group productions will be accepted.

At least one person in each group must be a student at a Georgia school or be a student who is a resident of Georgia. Winners will be chosen by a group of independent judges and announced in March 2009.  Winning productions will be shown at the Keep Roswell Beautiful 20th Anniversary Celebration and Environmental Film Festival in April. 

Prizes:
1st place - $1,000                    2nd place - $500                      Honorable Mention - $100

River of Words                                                                                                                                    Deadline: February 15, 2009
River of Words is a poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of WATERSHEDS. The contest is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of the place they live, and to express, through poetry and art, what they discover. www.riverofwords.org

Fair Bear Goes to Washington                                                                                                         Deadline: February 20, 2009
A Creative Writing Competition for 6th graders about a character “Fair Bear” voting for the first time in the 2008  Presidential election.                                                                                                                                     

The Seimens We Can Change the World Challenge                                                   Deadline: March 15, 2009
Gives students opportunity, tools and inspiration.  A partnership between Seimens, National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and Discovery Education, the Challenge gives middle school students from across the chance to create sustainable replicable solutions to local environmental problems.  Using a science inquiry approach, they’ll address an ecological problem in their community, research it, create a plan for improving the situation and determine how their green solution can be replicated by students facing the same problem in similar communities.  For more information, visit your science teacher’s FSA downloadable files (Agents of Change) or go to www.wecanchange.com

The Optimist Club Oratorical Contest
