FSA Eighth graders went on a tour of South Georgia from May 2- 4, 2008. Fourty eight students, three teachers and two father-chaperones embarked on a three day, 800 mile adventure around the state.

Even though the tour was designed to correlate with the social studies curriculum, there were also plenty of extra activities so that the trip was both educational and fun. For many students, this was the trip of a lifetime and will be a lasting memory of their middle school days at FSA!

The trip began on Friday with lunch in Forsyth Park, Savannah, followed by a Dolphin Cruise into the Atlantic Ocean. Students watched as the dolphins and their babies frolicked in the waves and the pelicans dove for prey. The boat ride was followed by a serious visit to the First African Baptist Church in Historic Savannah, which was part of the Underground Railroad. The first day was capped off by a walk through River Street where students shopped for Mother's Day gifts and sampled delicious Savannah candy.

Saturday morning students had an early wake-up call before heading to Fort Pulaski, the last brick fort. After exploring the old prison cells in the fort students loaded up the bus and headed to the Okeefenoke Swamp, where they rode swamp boats past alligators sunning themselves. Some brave students even tasted the tea-brown swamp water, which is said to be very pure.... The day ended in Albany at the Fun Park where students played Laser Tag, rode Go Karts and Bumper Boats and played miniature gold.

The final morning began with a somber tour of Andersonville National Park and Civil War POW camp. Students sat in replicas of original Shebangs and saw the Drummer Boy Museum. Finally, we had a final stop in Plains, home of the 39th president, Jimmy Carter.

Three hours later we arrived at FSA and happy parents and students were reunited in the parking lot and the chaperones and teachers went home for a well-deserved nap!
